Sam Smith will present a talk about his creative process: from research to production, filmmaking to installation and performances.
Smith will take two recent projects as case studies: Form Variations (2014) a single channel video installation exhibited at Künstlerhaus (Berlin) and The Royal Standard (Liverpool); and NOTES (2013-2015) a series of video essay performances initiated in Lisbon in 2013 and subsequently presented at the ICA (London); KW Institute for Contemporary Art (Berlin); and De Appel Arts Centre (Amsterdam).
During the talk he will discuss the difference and similarities between the production methods for each work, including how each mode presents a unique way of translating threads of research. The talk will cover his experiences working with a film crew, directing actors and editing for single screen projection versus the unfixed nature of dealing with sampled material and the computer desktop as a performance site. Floor discussions will follow the talk, where the audience will be invited to participate in an engaging conversation with the artist.
